A NEW CHAPTER IN
OUR FAMILY AFFAIR
It has been a whirlwind year in the Willekes household, starting off with a significant business shift at Selling Halloween/The Nightmare Zone, culminating with our first child Amelia being born four days shy of
Halloween 2016, and ending with uploading all the files
for this issue to the printer on December 28th.
I purchased Selling Halloween from my mother’s
company earlier this year, prior to the sale of the
publishing business my parents founded to a larger B2B
media company. With my mother Gabriele Edgell’s well-earned retirement, my pregnancy and Amelia’s birth, and
publishing as a newly home-based business, I can say
without exaggeration that this year has brought many
unexpected learning experiences, just as motherhood has!
The combination has been nothing short of remarkable.
My mom has taken on a new title of grandma, but she
also made time to help our tiny new staff—me and my editor—put out this issue by micro
managing many of the countless details that need to be considered by a brand-new publishing company.
We are happy to welcome our new editor to our family business—Marie Griffin, who joined us just in
time to take the editorial reins as the season kicked into high gear. Marie is a seasoned B2B editor who
has run publications in the retail pharmacy, housewares, furniture and optical industries, but she has been
surprised to discover how different the retail Halloween and haunt attraction businesses are from any of the
others she covered previously. More unexpected learning experiences!
Marie has a great vision for the future of Selling Halloween and The Nightmare Zone, and you will see an
initial taste of that in our first edition together. She will be attending the HIA/Urban Expositions’ Halloween
& Party Expo in New Orleans and Transworld’s Halloween & Attractions Show in St. Louis, and she is looking
forward to quickly immersing herself in our business so that she can make this brand even more valuable
to you in the coming years. I expect you to embrace her warmly and generously show her the ropes as you
have done for me.
Finally, but certainly not least, I want to shout out to Art Director Kelly Holodak. You’ve seen her signature
designs in prior issues, but she is breaking out this year with even greater creativity and style.
As I juggled the work of producing this magazine and our baby’s needs,
I realized how thankful I am for the opportunities I have enjoyed getting
to know this market and the wildly creative people in it. As our family is
blessed with a beautiful and now healthy baby girl (her first days are a
story for another time), my heart is overflowing with hope and joy, and I
extend to all of you my most fervent wishes for a prosperous 2017.
Please enjoy this fresh, revamped edition of our annual issue—a true
labor of love.
