There’s no arrgh-ument that pirates,
fantastic beasts, mythical creatures, superheroes,
anthropomorphic vehicles and even emoticons will be
lurking on people’s doorsteps next Halloween as marketers
turn a treasure trove of blockbuster movies into box office
gold for licensors and the retailers who get on board.
“We expect 2017 to be a great year. With all the new
licensed product for multiple demographics, supported by the movie
marketing from the big studios, there are going to be lots of choices,
great products and lots of excitement,” says Bernice Nesbit, director of
marketing at Disguise.
Some of the most successful names in entertainment history will be
extended and revamped in 2017, including “Star Wars Rogue One”
and “Star Wars Episode 8,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell
No Tales,” a sumptuous new “Wonder Woman” and “Guardians of the
Galaxy Vol. 2,” as well as such kid-friendly titles as “LEGO Ninjago,”
“Despicable Me 3,” “Cars 3,” a live-action “Beauty and the Beast” and the
first feature-length “My Little Pony” movie.
“We are the most excited about the major films from Warner
Brothers, DC Comics, Lucas Film, Marvel Comics, and
Universal Studios,” notes Howard Beige, executive vice
president at Rubie’s Costume Company.
“The hot films coming out from these
licensors will not only be the most
popular sellers for Halloween 2017,
A dedicated licensing program from
elope is designed to put “Pirates of the
Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”
and “Beauty and the Beast” on the map
once again this fall. Its portfolio will also
include a replica line of “Fantastic Beasts
and Where to Find Them” costumes, as
well as an expanded presence of mythical
creatures and animals.
“Woodland creatures and other animals
have been super-hot for a couple of years now.
This trend will only gain momentum in 2017,”
observes Kevin Johnson, chief excitement officer at
elope. “Dressing as a pirate is the No. 1 costume for men,
and every year that a new ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movie
comes out, that just boosts men’s natural desire to dress as
a pirate. It’s a great costume to talk funny and drink rum
in,” he jokes.
